The Problem with Being Gay About a year ago one of my best friends and I bought some glow-in-the-dark stars to paste on my ceiling. After about four hours of neck-straining work, we shut off all the lights in my room, closed the door, jumped onto my bed and looked up to admire the green glowing wonders above us. After a few minutes of quiet talking, my friend said something that totally blew me away. It might have been that he was tired from the days work, or maybe a little light-headed from all the dust and stucco we inhaled while placing those stars on my ceiling. Or maybe it was the darkness that made him feel as if he had some kind of security. But something about the situation made him say one of the most serious things he†¦show more content†¦I remember him saying that if he were queer, he would never reach his goals and aspirations. He would probably never be a senator or hold any type of political office because his sexual orientation would be so hard an issue to overcome. He would never have that traditional perfect family that he dreamed of when he was younger. He would never be a real father in that perfect family. His high school social life would be torn apart. Rumors would fly, and his reputation would go down the drain. But what he was most scared of was what his parents reactions would be to his coming out of the closet. He didnt want them to think that their son was a failure; that he would not carry on the family name with honor. He was so scared. From then on, having been alerted to my friends distress, I decided to watch myself around the subject of homosexuality. The MIT audience is obviously much more liberal than that of high school in terms of accepting and supporting the actions of individuals whose sexual orientation pushes them towards other individuals of the same sex. Yet I know that MIT is more the exception than the norm, and most people are still stuck with that high school mentality.
